Titans of Modern Mexico: Medieval & Early Renaissance Spain

August 11–October 24, 2004

The Meadows Museum features a selection of ten masterpieces of 20th-century paintings from the corporate collection of FEMSA in Monterrey, Mexico. The paintings were chosen to highlight the creative forces that shaped Mexican art during the last century. Titans of Modern Mexico includes: El Grande de España, Diego Rivera’s monumental 1914 cubist portrait; a stunning figurative painting by the great modernist Roberto Montenegro; and a delicate watercolor by Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington representing fantasy creatures submerged in a dream-like composition as well as important works by Orozco, Siqueiros and Tamayo. Fondo Económico Sociedad Anónima in Monterrey, known as FEMSA, owns one of Mexico’s most important private collections, comprising more than 1,000 modern and contemporary Latin American Paintings, sculptures, drawings, etchings, and photographs.
