Past Exhibition – Maya Textile

This exhibition showcases contemporary Maya textiles which, as works of art, reflect the splendor and continuity of the Maya culture that has spanned the centuries and continues to thrive today. The exhibition will include twenty 20th-century textiles designed by some of the leading artists of Mexico and Guatemala; more than two dozen huipiles (embroidered women’s dresses); photographs; and two paintings by modern artists Carlos Mérida and Rufino Tamayo. These works will be displayed in the Museum’s first floor galleries and will be divided into five sections focusing on different themes: Maya textiles as artistic expression; contemporary continuity of the Maya tradition; foreign influences in Maya design; the effect of textiles in painting; and the human body as a frame for art. In addition, there will be two special presentations of huipiles from the regions of Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico.

The exhibition has been organized by the Meadows Museum in association with Fomento Cultural Banamex.

Esta exposición muestra algunos tejidos confeccionados por los Maya que, como obras de arte, reflejan el esplendor, fuerza y continuidad de esta cultura precolombina a lo largo de los siglos. En esta exposición se presentan más de dos docenas de huipiles confeccionados durante el siglo XX por importantes artistas de México y Guatemala, además de fotografías y dos pinturas realizadas por los maestros Carlos Mérida y Rufino Tamayo. Las piezas se exhibirán en las galerías bajas del museo y quedarán divididas en cinco secciones que abarcan diferentes temas: los tejidos Mayas como expresión artística, la continuidad de la tradición Maya en el mundo contemporáneo: las influencias extranjeras en el diseño Maya: la repercusión de los tejidos en la pintura; y el cuerpo humano como receptor de este arte. Asimismo, se mostrarán de manera especial algunos huipiles realizados en Guatemala y en Chiapas (Méjico).
