The Meadows Museum offers currently enrolled SMU students opportunities to gain invaluable, on-the-job museum experience. We look for energetic, friendly, ready-to-learn SMU students to fill two types of positions:

As one of the most public-facing parts of campus, the Meadows Museum frequently needs part-time student help. Some positions require Federal Work Study eligibility.

Internships at the Meadows Museum

The Meadows Museum is committed to supporting and developing the next generation of museum professionals through paid internships. Available to currently enrolled SMU undergraduate and graduate students, internships provide unique opportunities to learn from the professional staff at a world-renowned museum of Spanish art. Meadows Museum interns work on meaningful projects that support the institutional mission while developing real-world experience that is applicable across many careers, such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, project management, and research. Internship opportunities vary each year and by department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Internships at the Meadows Museum are only available to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in for-credit classes at SMU. Students applying for a summer internship opportunity must be enrolled in at least one for-credit class at SMU during the following fall semester..

Yes!  All Meadows Museum internships are paid! Undergraduate-level internships are paid $15/hour and graduate-level internships are paid $20/hour. Payment is processed biweekly through SMU payroll.

Students must talk with their professors or advisors about their department’s process for earning academic credit for an internship.  The Meadows Museum is happy to complete departmental paperwork required for a student to receive credit for an internship.

No. The Meadows Museum does not offer unpaid internships of any kind. Volunteer opportunities are offered exclusively through the Meadows Museum docent program and do not carry an academic/job experience component. There are two options. 1) Academic year Internships are typically 10 hours per week and are aligned with SMU’s  academic calendar. 2) Summer Internships are typically between 10 to 20 hours per week for 10 weeks beginning in June. Please note that the museum does not offer single-semester internships during the academic year.

Yes. Interns set their individual work schedules in discussion with their supervisor, taking into account class schedule, holidays, breaks in SMU’s academic calendar, and any special needs. While supervisors are happy to be flexible, interns are expect to adhere to the agreed schedule and notify their supervisor of any unexpected absences.

Check this webpage in early March each year for upcoming internship opportunities and guidance on how to apply? for summer and the following academic year. Applications are due in late March and applicants will be notified by mid-April so they can enroll in upcoming courses accordingly.

Applications are released in early March of each year and completed online through a link on the Employment page of the Meadows Museum’s website. Applicants must submit two academic or professional references, a resume, and a cover letter outlining qualifications for and expectation of the desired internship.

Yes! The Meadows Museum frequently employs SMU students both with and without Federal Work Study Program funding. Opportunities for SMU students to support a variety of departments are typically posted during the first week of the academic year on the museum’s Employment page. Unlike internships, students cannot earn academic credit for employment at the Meadows Museum.

The museum does not offer internships for non-SMU students. Non-SMU students may consult the Employment page of our website for current part-time and full-time openings. All are encouraged to visit our galleries and attend public programs, including talks, lectures, performances, and films.  Please visit our Program Calendar to see what’s coming up.
