Listen to a Playlist of Music from the time of Madrazo

Capturing Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta’s time period and setting in music is a difficult task due to the many places relevant to his life. He was born into a famous Spanish artistic family and trained in Madrid. He spent most of his adult life in Paris, but also frequently traveled overseas to New York City. Mirroring the trajectory of Madrazo’s life, this playlist presents a wide variety of musical styles and mediums. In order to highlight his heritage, we included several Spanish compositions that prominently feature the guitar. Further, we paralleled his residence in France by covering several trends in late nineteenth-century French art music. Lastly, to accentuate Madrazo’s success and reputation in the United States, we selected some American pieces from around the turn of the century.

We hope that your viewing of the exhibition is enhanced by the accompanying music accessible by clicking the Spotify link below. Nearly everything on this playlist was composed during Madrazo’s lifetime and could have been heard by Madrazo and his contemporaries. While the playlist is organized somewhat chronologically, it is designed to be enjoyed either in order or shuffled. Please note, headphones must be used if listening in museum galleries.
