Territoriality and Devotion in the Spanish Americas
Rosario Granados Salinas, Marilynn Thoma Curator, Art of the Spanish Americas, Blanton Museum, The University of Texas at Austin.
Numerous depictions of Marian images include representations of their associated shrines. In this lecture, Rosario Granados will examine how these buildings served to delineate specific territories and thus enhanced social relations while promoting specific donors. The discussion will also address how these dynamics shifted when images bearing the same name were venerated across distinct geographic regions.
