The Meadows Museum is the only U.S. venue for From Cranach to Monet: Highlights of the Pérez Simón Collection. The Pérez Simón Collection comprises more than 1,000 works of painting, sculpture, drawing, decorative arts and manuscripts and was assembled over the past twenty-five years by Josefina and Juan Antonio Pérez Simón, Spaniards who have made Mexico their home.
This is the first-ever exhibition of major paintings from this important private collection. Spanning the 14th through the 19th centuries, the 57 works on display represent the core of the treasures from their holdings. Featuring 46 different artists, including masterpieces by Cranach, Rubens, Van Dyck, Canaletto, Goya, Leighton, Corot, Cézanne, Gauguin, Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh, among other major painters, the exhibition provides a broad overview of the development of European painting from the Renaissance era to Impressionism, including fine examples of the Italian, German, Dutch, English, Flemish, Spanish and French schools.
The show comes to the Meadows Museum directly from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the exhibition’s organizer.
An insightful educational program, including several lecture series and workshops, is being planned to complement this exhibition. Two major illustrated publications will also accompany the show: a bilingual exhibition catalogue published by the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and a catalogue raisonné of the entire collection that was published in Mexico City in 2003.
This exhibition is made possible by a gift from The Meadows Foundation
Television support for this exhibition is provided by CBS 11-KTVT
The “Collectors, Philanthropists, and Visionaries” lecture series is supported by Christie’s.
