SUMMARY:Brocateado in the Viceroyalty of Peru: Textile Designs in Painting and Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Brocateado refers to the painted technique applied across viceregal painting and sculpture\, particularly that of South America\, to represent patterned brocades\, which are fine fabrics woven to create a design using gold- or silver-wrapped thread. Painters imitated brocades by utilizing rich colors and gold leaf or gold paint\, generating a dazzling visual effect. This presentation considers how the materials used in the technique are central to our understanding of the images and contemporary viewers’ relationships to them. This lecture will question why painted references to textiles were so common in religious art\, why brocateado in particular was popular\, and what they teach us about of viceregal visual culture. \nBob and Jean Smith Auditorium. Space is limited; register online in advance. Meadows Museum members: Free. SMU students/faculty/staff: Free. Non-members\, Paperless Pass: $10. \n

SUMMARY:Painting Textiles: The Power of Cloth in Colonial Peru
DESCRIPTION:Julia McHugh\, Trent A. Carmichael Director of Academic Initiatives and Curator of Arts of the Americas\, Nasher Museum of Art\, Duke University \nThe representation of textiles—rendered with striking detail and often gold embellishment—functioned as a key visual strategy in paintings of the Spanish Americas\, especially within the Cusco School. This talk will focus on the adornment of women\, including the Virgin Mary\, saints\, and elites\, and draws on both paintings and archival sources to trace the circulation and value of European and Indigenous textiles throughout the Viceroyalty of Peru. By depicting locally recognizable fabrics and materials\, Andean artists localized European imagery and helped position Cusco as a major artistic center in the colonial art market. \nBob and Jean Smith Auditorium.
