SUMMARY:Movies with the Meadows: Fernando Fernán Gómez | El extraño viaje (Strange Voyage)
DESCRIPTION:El extraño viaje (Strange Voyage)\, 1964 \nDirected by Fernando Fernán Gómez \nFernando Fernán Gómez (1921-2007) is considered one of the greatest and most prolific figures in Spanish cinema. Over the course of his sixty-year career he won Goya Awards as an actor\, writer\, and director\, and in 1981 Spain’s Ministry of Culture honored him with the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts. This fall\, the Meadows Museum and Dallas Film celebrate this titan of Spanish cinema by screening three of the best-known films he directed. \nDrawing inspiration from a real-life murder mystery\, El extraño viaje centers on three unmarried siblings who live together in a small town: the domineering Ignacia and the childlike Paquita and Venancio. Hearing strange noises on a stormy Saturday night\, the frightened Paquita wakes her brother and seeks out her sister\, who seems to be hiding someone in her bedroom. The mystery that unfolds comes to a climax with a dreadful discovery that shocks the entire town. Suppressed by censors during the Francoist regime\, El extraño viaje is now regarded as one of the greatest films of the era. Filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar cited it as one of thirteen Spanish movies that inspired his own career. \nSpain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts rates this film ICAA 12+ (not recommended for audiences under twelve years of age)\, but the Meadows Museum screening is intended for mature audiences only. \nSpanish with English subtitles | 92 minutes \nSpace is limited\, register online in advance. \nFree

SUMMARY:Movies with the Meadows: Fernando Fernán Gómez | El mundo sigue (Life Goes On)
DESCRIPTION:El mundo sigue (Life Goes On)\, 1963/1965 \nDirected by Fernando Fernán Gómez \nFernando Fernán Gómez (1921-2007) is considered one of the greatest and most prolific figures in Spanish cinema. \nSet in 1960s Madrid\, the family drama El mundo sigue reflects the poverty and misery Spaniards suffered under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Eloísa is a selfless wife and mother who lives with her husband\, a local policeman who is aggressive at home. Their son spends his days beseeching God to forgive his family’s sins\, while their two daughters share a tumultuous sibling rivalry as they pursue love and social status. El mundo sigue is known as Fernán Gómez’s “cursed” film because of the obstacles it faced from censors before and after its production. Filmed in 1963\, it was screened only in a single theater two years later\, and fell into obscurity until its successful theatrical rerelease in 2015. \nSpain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts rates this film ICAA 18+ (not recommended for audiences under eighteen years of age)\, but the Meadows Museum screening is intended for mature audiences only. \nSpanish with English subtitles | 119 minutes \nSpace is limited\, register online in advance. \nFree

SUMMARY:Movies with the Meadows: Fernando Fernán Gómez | El viaje a ninguna parte (Voyage to Nowhere)
DESCRIPTION:El viaje a ninguna parte (Voyage to Nowhere)\, 1986 \nDirected by Fernando Fernán Gómez \nFernando Fernán Gómez(1921-2007) is considered one of the greatest and most prolific figures in Spanish cinema. \nFernando Fernán Gómez himself stars in his masterpiece\, a melancholic look at the postwar period through the eyes of a group of traveling actors. Set in Franco’s Spain in the 1940s\, the comedic troupe goes from town to town to perform\, oblivious to the country’s transformations and the fact that their profession is becoming obsolete due to the increasing popularity of movie theaters. The film explores the actors’ struggles with love\, money\, and family as they pursue their dreams. At the first Goya Awards in 1987\, El viaje a ninguna parte won the prizes for Best Film\, Best Director\, and Best Screenplay. \nSpain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts rates this film as suitable for general audiences\, but the Meadows Museum screening is intended for mature audiences only. \nSpanish with English subtitles | 140 minutes \nSpace is limited\, register online in advance. \nFree
