Visual Description

This is an outdoor scene primarily in subtle blues, purples, and greens. The paint was applied by the artist in small strokes and dabs, lacking fine detail while adding an effect of movement throughout the scene, as though wind is flowing between the trees and grass. In the front center of this 2-foot-tall by 1.5-foot-long oil painting stands a grain bale, which is the main focus of the painting taking up about one quarter of its width. The bale has a cylindrical base and cone-shaped top. The top of the bale’s mostly beige and white tones stand out against the blue flowers and grass surrounding it. A low stone wall, in shades of deep blue and violet, stretches across the canvas behind the bale, dividing the canvas in half.
Moving upward toward the top half of the painting, behind the wall, a hilly landscape stretches to reveal a small town with red-roofed buildings gathered along the right-side edge of the scene and scattered throughout the background where two mountain peaks rise up. The hills feature sparse green trees and, coming from one of the buildings in the left-side distance, gray clouds—perhaps of chimney smoke—spread diagonally toward the upper-right corner of the painting. The sky is a hazy mix of peach and blue.
