Sorolla: A Musical Imagery – SOLD OUT!

September 21, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

Free – $10

Marta Espinós, pianist and music curator
Carol Leone, chair of piano studies and professor of piano, SMU
What do Joaquín Sorolla’s paintings sound like? What rhythms and melodies might accompany his portraits and his Mediterranean beaches? In this audiovisual recital, renowned pianist Marta Espinós will perform a selection of works by Spanish composers that echo the luminosity and poignancy of Sorolla’s art. The musical program will feature contemporaries of Sorolla along with composers of the subsequent generation whose distinctly Spanish works provide a vibrant aural parallel to impressionistic painting. Composers include Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Turina, Óscar Esplá, Frederic Mompou, and Joaquín Rodrigo. This multisensory aesthetic experience will conclude with a discussion between Espinós and Leone.

This project is included in the official program of the Sorolla Centenary in Spain and the USA Tour and is presented in partnership with the Joaquín Achúcarro Foundation.
