FURTHER AFIELD | Redrawing Childhood in Spain: From Sorolla to the Spanish Avant-Garde
September 27, 2023 @ 12:00 am - 12:45 pm CDT
Free – $5
Anna Kathryn Kendrick, clinical associate professor of literature and director of global awards, NYU Shanghai
Further Afield virtual talks provides broader social, political, economic, and historical context for works of art in the museum’s collection. This fall the program focuses on childhood in Spain from the early modern period (roughly 1500 to 1800) to the early twentieth century.
This virtual lecture will offer a history of childhood in Spanish culture from the late nineteenth century to the eve of the Spanish Civil War. During this period, children were celebrated by poets and artists alike for the radiance of their creative production and their all-embracing perspective on the world. For an avant-garde seeking cultural renovation, children’s development of language and of vision provided a model for artistic imagination and creativity. Surveying the impact of artists and authors including Joaquín Sorolla, Carmen Conde, Federico García Lorca, Jorge Guillén, and Ángel Ferrant, Kendrick will discuss the connection between the development of new pedagogical approaches in the early twentieth century and the aesthetics of the Spanish Silver Age.
